It's important for everyone to understand that black didn't make the world greedy. The world was already greedy; black has just learned how to thrive within it. Black has two big things on its side. One, it understands and accepts the system better than anyone else.
And two, black doesn't place any restrictions on itself that might make its success more difficult. The philosophy of black is summed up well by the flavor text on one of the color's most iconic although not Standard-legal cards.
These are some of the best black cards in today's competitive Standard. Let's discuss what makes these so powerful. Grasp of Darkness may be pound-for-pound the best removal spell in Standard. It's good because just about every deck plays cards that it trades with favorably. In fact, there are few, if any, common threats sample complaint letter to neighbor about tree cost two mana or less that can't be dealt with by way of Grasp of Darkness.
To make things even better, Grasp of Darkness is an instant, meaning that we can accrue big advantages by using it during combat or simply find other ways to put our mana to work when that killable threat on the other side of the table just hasn't been played yet. The card is especially strong against decks that use Archangel Avacyn. The ability to kill an opposing five-mana creature for two mana is often a big enough tempo advantage to get ahead of those types of decks and establish control over the game.
It's probably correct to play four copies of Grasp of Darkness in just about any deck that can reliably cast the card on the second turn. Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet is one of the most powerful creatures in Standard. Kalitas wins races with lifelink and makes our kill spells better by rewarding us with a horde of Zombies. Kalitas's 4 toughness is a lot against the mostly white and red decks in Standard, and that makes it easy to protect in those matchups. It usually feels like it's hard to lose once you untap with Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet in play.

You have to love deck building, mana bases, variance, making plans, opening booster packs, and playing games—all under the watchful eye of a clock. We may be eschewing the Modern discussion this week in favor of something more forty-card-oriented, but we won't be traveling too far. After all, part of what makes this set special is that we'll be able to draft these amazing cards.
For the first time, for a lot of us. This week I'd like to take a look at the ten color-pairs and how they are generally represented in Limited. To pay homage to Modern Week, we'll also highlight a few of the color pairs that caught my eye from Modern Masters Edition. Mox Opal Art by Volkan Baga. When considering a brand new format, it's useful to think in terms of archetypes. An archetype is a typical example of a certain thing. In this case, how two-color combinations work together in Limited Magic.
Most sets are designed such that you will be playing two-color decks in Limited. The times when they aren't tend to stand out, as was the case in Khans of Tarkir. But for the most part you should expect new Limited sets to be two colors with some amount of mana fixing to enable potential splashes. If that's the case, then there should be ten two-color combinations that we'll see over and over in Limited.
Getting a grasp on what each of these does historically can help you prepare for a new set. I want to note here that we are speaking in generalities.
Most sets offer exceptions to these two-color pairs and how they function. New mechanics and set structures can mess with this as well. Sometimes we see the color pairs expressed in a way you wouldn't expect.
Let's dive into these in an attempt to set a blueprint for what these color pairs do from a set-to-set perspective. As mentioned, I'll also be including some Modern Masters Edition predictions in a few of the ones that caught my eye. When most people think of white and blue for Limited, they think of the "flyers" deck.
This is a deck that uses flying creatures from both white and blue these two colors get the most flying creatures to win in the air. It also uses high-toughness blockers on the ground in combination with blue tempo spells and reactive white removal to slow down the opponent long enough to get the job done in the air.

When this archetype is good, it tends to be very good. Flying is just so strong in Limited. In Modern Masters Editionit seems to have a strong artifact sub-theme, as well as touches on the Spirits deck we talked about in our preview column for the set though that deck is white-black. Blue and red tend to not make a great pair, to be honest. One thing we'll see from these color pairs is that the amount and quality of removal dictates a lot of what these decks can do.
Blue gets some tempo spells and soft removal removal that doesn't actually kill the creatureand red gets burn spells. Burn spells are traditionally good at killing small- and medium-sized creatures, but can have a hard time with big, bomby, threats.
When this archetype does come together, it's usually because a certain mechanic enables it. The decks are tempo based, and quick. They involve haste creatures, flyers, and cheap, interactive spells. They usually don't play defense very well, so they trend toward the assertive end of the spectrum. Green and blue is probably my favorite two-color combo in Magic.The format is diverse with interesting game play. The deck also has a fairly high curve and good ways to use all of its mana on most turns, so having lands come into play tapped later in the game can be quite punishing.
Llanowar Elves seems like a natural inclusion to Golgari Midrange. Putting planeswalkers out a turn ahead of schedule allows you to gain an additional turn of value and a huge tempo boost. The biggest downside is against decks like Mono-Red where they are able to both Shock it or pick it off for free with Goblin Chainwhirler.

This is an alternative 1-mana card to Llanowar Elvesallowing you to catch up to aggro decks like Mono-Red without exposing yourself to Goblin Chainwhirler. Dead Weight has natural synergy with a staple of the deck, Golgari Findbroker. Dead Weight also picks up some slack against cards like Thief of Sanitywhich Golgari is naturally weak to without a cheap removal spell.
Wildgrowth Walker looked a little too cute to me as well. Then I got to play with them all, and it all clicked. Wildgrowth Walker is one of the best ways to fight mono-red. Once the first explore trigger pumps Wildgrowth Walkerit becomes extremely difficult to deal with, provides a ton of life, and becomes an enormous threat in the process. This does seem a little too cute to me, and I think the explore package is where we want to be right now.
You stabilize at a low life total and can use the backside to gain life, sacrificing creatures like Golgari Findbroker. Both of these 3-drops serve the purpose of advancing your battlefield while allowing you to hit additional land drops. Lastly, of course, Jadelight Ranger allows you to go on the Wildgrowth Walker plan. The first time I played against it in the mirror it ate me alive.
I then added it to my own list and tried it out. It was subpar for me. Plaguecrafter is an awesome addition to Golgari Midrange. It allows you to pick off planeswalkers like Teferi, Hero of Dominariaor Sarkhan, Firebloodand also interacts favorably against cards like Niv-Mizzet, Parun. These decks tend to spend their entire turn tapping out for their big threat and Plaguecrafter can take it out for 3 mana while potentially upgrading a creature.
The best part of Plaguecrafter is that it can be bought back with your creature recursion and used again.
The only question with Chupacabra in the deck is three copies or four. This card is much better than I originally thought. It plays the role of Chandra, Torch of Defiance in some ways as it can come down and take out a 3-drop and leave you a small value engine for later.
Yes, you have to sacrifice a permanent to draw an additional card but you can usually find an explore creature or extra land kicking around not doing too much for you.Expect another update tonight at some point.
